Detroit Lions

2009 Detroit Lions Football Preview:

The Detroit Lions enter the 2009 NFL season with a lot less baggage then previous years. Gone is their former GM Matt Millen and players like Joey Harrington, Charles Rogers and Mike Williams. Instead the Lions will field a team built around playmaking wide out Calvin Johnson and veteran quarterback Daunte Culpepper. Two great things for Lions fans is the number of young, talented players the team has acquired in recent years and the new regime giving them a fresh breath of air. And Lions need to look no further than the NFC for inspiration, because the Arizona Cardinals proved that any team in football has a shot at the Super Bowl.

Founded: 1930
Location: Detroit, Michigan
Stadium: Ford Field
Conference: NFC North
Mascot: Roary
Notable Players: Barry Sanders, Bobby Layne & Dick “Night Train” Lane

The Detroit Lions play in the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). The franchise was officially founded as the Spartans of Portsmouth, Ohio in 1929, but moved to Detroit as the Lions in 1934. The Lions won four NFL championships up to 1957 in the years before the league merger. Detroit’s most productive decade in recent memory, the 1990′s, were defined by Hall of Fame running back, Barry Sanders, considered one of the greatest backs of all time. Sanders led the Lions through a decade of playoff appearances, but no Superbowl.
